Currently, the court can only accept Money Orders or Cashier's Checks. No Personal Checks. Cash will be accepted if paid in person at the court location.

YOU WERE GIVEN A COURTESY LETTER BY THE OFFICER AT THE TIME YOU RECEIVED A CITATION THAT EXPLAINS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.    READ IT!

PLEASE NOTE: The Judge cannot discuss the merits of a pending judicial proceeding prior to actual trial (Canon6(c) Code of Judicial Conduct). This means that the Judge is forbidden from discussing your citation with you before trial except as a procedural matter. If you plead GUILTY and have extenuating circumstances, the Judge can discuss them with you.

A JUVENILE who fails to appear by the date and time as it appears on the citation may have his/her driver’s license suspended as established by the Transportation Code 729.001.

All defendants MUST inform the court of any change of address or phone number.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR CITATION:

  1. YOU MAY PAY YOUR TICKET
    • Pay the fine as outlined below. Check GUILTY or NO CONTEST on the Plea Form given to you by the Officer. Hand deliver or mail to the address above:
      • a copy of citation (ticket)
      • completed Plea Form
      • payment by Cashier’s Check or Money Order made out to “Burton Municipal Court
    • Mail must be postmarked BEFORE the appearance date noted on the citation. Failure to respond in a timely manner can result in an arrest warrant being issued for you.
  2. YOU MAY ASK FOR A TRIAL
    • You must send to the address above:
      • Completed Plea Form, noting NOT GUILTY and designating trial by Judge or Jury.
      • Copy of Citation (ticket)
      • Copy of your valid Texas Driver’s License.
    • A Trial Date will be set by the court and you will be notified of that date.
  3. YOU MAY TAKE A DRIVING SAFETY COURSE (CDL license holders are NOT ELIGIBLE)
    • To be eligible you must:
      • Have a valid Texas Driver’s License
      • Have NOT taken the course in the past 12 months for the purpose of ticket dismissal
      • Not have been cited for 25 mph or more over the speed limit
      • Send the following items postmarked BEFORE the appearance date on your citation
        1. Completed Plea Form (check # 3)
        2. Proof of Liability Insurance. NOTE: Defendants name must appear on the policy.
        3. Copy of Citation (ticket)
        4. Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope
        5. Copy of your valid Texas Driver’s License
        6. Court fees of $109.10 (Money Order or Cashier’s Check) for speeding and other moving Violations
    • If you apply and do not meet eligibility requirements, you forfeit $10 Administrative Fee and your entire fine amount will be due. You will have 90 days from the date of court approval to complete an approved course anywhere in Texas. You must return the signed Certificate of Completion to the court. If you fail to meet the deadline, a warrant for your arrest may be issued and/or your license renewal may be denied.
  4. YOU MAY DO NOTHING
    • AFTER YOUR APPEARANCE DATE PASSES AND YOU HAVE FAILED TO APPEAR IN COURT:
      • You will be charged with an additional criminal violation of Violate Promise to Appear/Failure to Appear for which additional fines and costs will attach.
      • An ARREST WARRANT will be issued by the court
      • The renewal of your Driver’s License may be denied.
